Calderdale Dementia Friendly Community Lunch and Learn

Find out how other organisations have attracted more customers and visitors by taking steps to become dementia-friendly!

Tuesday 8th October at the Central Methodist Church, Brighouse.

Businesses, community groups and charities across Calderdale could be missing out on  customers and visitors as well as income by not understanding how to adapt their service to meet the needs of people who are living with Dementia.

  • 80% of people with dementia listed shopping as their favourite activity.
  • 83% of people with memory problems have switched their shopping habits to places that are more accessible.

In most cases, very simple and inexpensive changes will remove barriers for people living with dementia in accessing services such as transport, clubs, churches, restaurants, shops, cultural and leisure venues etc. By making small changes in your organisation you are unlocking potential new business or interest from people who want to continue living as normally as possible.

DEMENTIA – THE CHALLENGE

1 in 14 people over 65 and 1 in 6 over 80 will develop dementia. Almost one million people in the UK (3000 in Calderdale) are living with dementia – and this figure is growing all the time.  Add to that the army of friends, families, and carers, and you can see the scale of the effects of dementia locally.  We could make Calderdale the destination for shopping, eating, drinking and leisure for people living with dementia, their friends, families, and carers.
