Across Calderdale, but we will try and match you with someone local to you
Marie Curie is the UK's leading end-of-life charity, providing hospice and at-home care, companionship and support over the phone to families experiencing terminal illness.
About the Organisation
Marie Curie is a national charity with Royal patronage founded in 1948. Our vision is a better end of life for all and our work is to drive fundamental change in end of life care so that everyone can have the best possible quality of life to the end whether that's in hospital, at home or in a hospice. We’re here for anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, and also their family and friends.
Helper volunteers allow carers to take a break, and help the person who is ill to complete the everyday tasks which can make a real difference to quality of life – from making a cup of tea to getting to a hospital appointment.
Helpers can be available for up to three hours a week, and can also provide support over the telephone. Read more about the benefits of our Helper service and how it works. https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/helper-volunteers/become-a-helper
"Becoming a companion volunteer is my way of saying thank you for this care and compassion in the most difficult of times. Being able to support another family with my time is a privilege, I look forward to my weekly visits and I hope I’m making a difference."
What are we looking for?
What will you get from us?
We are looking for people with empathy, compassion and understanding, who can provide company and support for people with a terminal illness, and their carers, in their own home. The Companion role doesn't include carrying out physical or medical care but does include simple activities such as baking, making a cuppa or even a bit of gardening.
As a Marie Curie volunteer, you must read our mandatory training materials before you start your volunteer role, and on an ongoing basis during your time as a Marie Curie volunteer. You play a vital part in our work and help us to reach more people and families living with a terminal illness, so it's really important you're fully equipped to carry out your role safely. We provide a day's training before you start and ongoing training plus regular meet ups with other volunteers. We recognise that people's lives can change so you can step away from your volunteering and return to it at any time, but you will be required to do a refresher training.
When do we need you?
