The Birchcliffe Centre, Birchcliffe Road, Hebden Bridge HX7 8DG
Our receptionists provide a warm welcome to the many community members who visit the Birchcliffe Centre each day, and help them engage with our rich local heritage through our exhibitions and publications.
About the Organisation
For more than 40 years, the Birchcliffe Centre has been home to a number of wonderful historical resources. Our digital archive holds the collections of Alice Longstaff, who captured the soul of Hebden Bridge on film for over 70 years. More recently, Pennine Heritage has been working with academics and students at the University of Huddersfield to further explore the rich history that we have stored away. We're also home to a number of tenants who use their creativity to inspire in the present. We help to connect Hebden Bridge's past and present in our wonderful Grade 2 listed former chapel.
The Birchcliffe Centre is a mixed-use space, so you will be welcoming community groups, clients for our tenant businesses, researchers using the archives, and visitors who have come to learn about the local landscape and history. Welcome Desk volunteers will be supervised by our Heritage Manager.
Your activities will include:
Discussing local history with visitors (no prior knowledge necessary!), providing information to tourists, directing visitors to businesses and events in the building, selling Pennine Heritage publications, answering phone queries and passing on messages
signing for packages
If you are interested in contributing in other ways (researching and writing blog posts, helping to plan events and exhibitions etc) our Heritage Manager will be happy to discuss this!
